Abstract

Allah has provided guidance in the form of Islam for Muslims to lead all aspects of life, including economic activities. The Islamic economic system is believed to be the answer to the current economic problems. Its goal is to achieve comprehensive falah by avoiding economic activities that violate Islamic principles, such as riba. The discourse on riba can be considered "classical" in both the development of Islamic thought and Islamic civilization because riba frequently occurs in all aspects of public life, especially economic transactions (referred to as muamalah in Islam). Riba is the taking of an additional amount, whether in a sale and purchase transaction or lending, contrary to the principles of muamalah in Islam. The prohibition of riba is derived from various sources such as the Qur'an and the Hadith of Rasulullah SAW, so scholars have firmly and clearly defined the prohibition of riba because it contains exploitative elements that can harm others. Therefore, this study aims to identify the Islamic economic system and the prohibition of riba from a historical perspective. The results of this study are expected to be a good reference for readers to understand the Islamic economic system and riba in the future.
